Sunsets on Fallen Officers

Yesterday, two West Memphis police officers and their two murderers lost their lives. My heart goes out to the people they left behind. My mind goes to the officers, their people, and the last times their lives touched them.  I don’t know why, but when I hear of people losing their lives unexpectedly, I find myself gripped by things like the day’s sunset and other beauties these people would have experienced.   On the way home yesterday, I had to pull over and reflect on their lives, mine, the dear things in life, and the sunset capping the day.

Couple of 2010 thoughts

(Just found this in my drafts folder)

Bob Hazlett is assembling predictions in 140.  In thinking of a submission, I shared one involving the foundation of Google Voice apps wherein:

Google will provide free phones in exchange for sending you ads based on your voice conversation. So, you’re letting Google technology listen to your phone calls. Google will provide proof that it’s not actually saving the data, but …   For those contracted with a current provider, there’d be a plan to opt-in for Google paying part of your monthly service fees to your current provider.

The paradigm of phone usage will expand further into traditionally non-voice areas.  We think phonecall to talk. What if we pressed 1 for Web, 2 for Video overview, 3 for accounting, 4 for directions, 5 for telephone, etc…

In a recent brainstorm, I brushed the notion of the Wave being part of the neural society. That being one where as soon as you conceived a thought, you shared it.  Other’s instant reactions shared back.  Wave can be such a network, and if we add voice participation to Wave, the ability to participate is expanded.

Birthday Notes

Turning 46 today has been an eye opener!  (Not even referring to the reading glasses I received as a gift, but Man they work great!)

Facebook Lesson

I pick my eyeballs off the floor when I look at the birthday wishes on my wall. I had always previously had my birthdate hidden. On the flip-side, I usually preferred to email someone rather than write on their Wall. That’s changed and I will now always at least put a wish out on a Friend’s Wall. I can’t wait to “Happy Birthday” someone.  Cheers and thank you!

La Luna

I was born on a Blue Moon. My mother’s maiden name is “Luna”. The Moon and I “go way back”, and I have an unusual adoration for it (her). As we’re wrapping-up this wonderful year on a Blue Moon, I can’t help but wonder what kind of fantastics we’ll find in the years ahead. It’s a very exciting time (and I do mean that to include the fear, and the standing upon unsteady ground). Whatever it holds, there’s a certain aspect of community that I find in our social networks, here with you, that provides a sense of camaraderie. I’m very grateful for the wonderful people here.

Gracias Compadres.

Hi folks!

Thank you for extending a big welcoming Memphis hand to Jeremiah Owyang!  That was awesome. I DM'd him asking to help set this up and he's accepted. To that end, I'm reaching out to you all here to see who's interested in helping in any way get this together. It'll be a great event and a nice chance to mix along with one of the major personalities in the Social industry.

I mention this only because many folks miss this. Pronouncing Owyang:
The "ow" in Jeremiah's last name is like "now. Then just add the "yang".

Please reply here or get with me @lalunablanca and let me know you can help. Im adding this to the Social Expedition google Wave - let me know your wave related email address.

Many thanks!
/Dave

p.s. My Jeremiah background:
In late 2007, I met and spent a couple of days around and learning from Jeremiah and others at a barcamp-style conference in Seattle (WCF07). Since then I've seen him at the last two SxSW's. What I m inspired the most about Jeremiah is his ability to present straight facts coupled with the sharpest analysis you may ever see.

THE NIGHT BEFORE FACEBOOK CHRISTMAS

From the mastermind of Steve Cox

Steve Cox THE NIGHT BEFORE FACEBOOK CHRISTMAS
by Steve Cox
(with apologies to Clement Clarke Moore and Henry Livingston)

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Net
Everyone logged on Facebook in hopes they would get;
Pretty virtual gifts on their virtual Walls,
Every virtual tree full of virtual balls;

The children were uploading Christmasy scenes,
While Photoshopped sugar-plums danced on their screens;
And mama on her laptop, and my netbook in my lap,
We'd just settled down for a long winter's chat,

When there on my monitor arose such a clatter,
I hit Refresh a few times to see what was the matter.
Away to my Friend's List I flew like a flash,
Clicked open the window and that's when it crashed.

The browser just sat there. All hung up. A no go.
My cursor was stuck over Facebook's pale logo,
When, what to my wandering mouse should appear,
But a small YouTube video screen coming clear,

With my media player, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment this guy was Saint Nick!
More rapid than eagles his Friends List they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Donald! now, Donna! now, Patrick and Tom!
On, Anna! on Jenny! on, somebody's mom!"
And they each made a Friend Request as he suggested,
They each clicked away till the Net got congested!

As Facebook strained mightily before the mounting Requests,
Each lonely Facebooker felt a little more blessed,
Then up to the Wall Posts the fingers they flew,
And they uploaded toy pics, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on my speakers,
Unmistakable sounds, like little toy squeakers...
Somewhere on the page came a chuckling sound,
Down the front of my screen ol' Santa scrolled with a bound!

He was dressed in the standard red suit, but on top;
His Santa cap had been all photoshopped!
With bundles of Friend Requests flung on his back,
He looked like a social director on crack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled as he clicked and began,
Reconnecting old friendships so long in the can.
His Status and Comments were witty and droll,
He got lots of Replies, no one thought him a troll;

His fingers they flew as he typed his commands,
Finding lonely Facebookers with a wave of his hand;
He included them each in a nice conversation,
That somehow would lighten each one's situation.

He was quick with a joke, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I read him, in spite of myself;
With a wink of his eye and a click of a link,
He would instantly comment, before you could think;

He wasted no words, but went straight to the point,
"Friends should care for friends in this Facebook joint!",
Then, laying his finger on top of a button,
With one tiny click he became less than nothing;

He sprang to his Netbook, to his team gave a whistle,
And they flew across the Net like some fiber optic missle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to Facebook, Good-night!"
